Post-Match Review: Orange County Flatlines, But Shows Signs Of A Pulse

The eternal battle between the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference saw the West take a massive blow. The first placed Orange County suffered back to back defeats to two Eastern Conference title contenders with neither side of the ball played very well. It is the third time this season that OC suffered consecutive defeats but is the first time that both losses came in the regular season. In a season that does not see each team play every other team, OC were drawn with the current first and fourth place team from the East and they did not pass the test.

Orange County for a second consecutive time saw themselves fall to 0-3 in the second half of play. The usually stoic OC defense has looked quite shaky in that while not giving up a multitude of chances but rather are letting teams capitalize on those chances. The game had a lot of similarities to the defeat from last week however the OC offense would wake up and score two goals in fairly quick succession. While the comeback would ultimately fall short it was definitely a step in the right direction and hopefully some momentum for the rest of the season. It was Ousmane Sylla and Yaniv Bazini that would get on the scoresheet for Orange County which has been a bit common. Ultimately OC would lose the match 2-3 but would still see their first place spot in the West safe, for now.

This was a definite litmus test for Orange County to see just how good of a team they are. While they ultimately failed at it there is still a lot of season left to play and OC are still on track for a solid playoff seed. We also saw the surprise return of a player. There are still a lot of games left to play and OC, historically speaking, always experiences one summer skid. It just looks like it happens in August this time.

FIRST HALF

The lineup for Orange County looked very normal for the starting XI. Nico Benalcazar would slot in at right back once again and it would be OC that is without the services of War, MacKinnon and Doody. The rest of the lineup is what we have come to expect with the addition of Brandon Cambridge at right wing. Regardless of who was starting for Orange County they would get off to a dreadful start when in the sixth minute they would get opened up down the middle and Louisville’s Ray Serrano would open the scoring. Alex Rando had virtually no chance of saving it. When you give Rando a reasonable chance at saving a shot then it is highly likely it will be done, but if he is hung out to dry then you cannot blame him in the slightest. This would happen later in the game too. It was an early goal that doomed OC to play from behind against Tampa Bay last week and an even earlier goal this week against Louisville.

But like last week it was Orange County that would still keep themselves in the match. It was also last week that in this very similar style of game that Orange County could not generate any offense whatsoever. Not a single shot on goal was taken against Tampa Bay and that was an improvement seen with OC actually out shooting Louisville in the evening. Ousmane Sylla would get a shot on target that was saved in the 22nd minute while Bazini would see a header go wide in the dying minutes of the first half. OC would go in the break down 0-1.

SECOND HALF

So if you are Orange County SC, you find yourselves only down by one goal against a high leverage offensive team with a leaky defense, then perhaps you are in a fairly good position. The only thing that Orange County cannot do is give up a super early goal to the same player in a nearly exact same manner as the first one he scored. OC did not learn their lesson. It would again be Ray Serrano that would find himself in a one on one scenario and would beat Rando to the far post. Orange County have found themselves caught out of position a few times in recent memory dating back to the Monterey Bay victory. This is definitely a bit strange for a team that has been good defensively where you would think they would concede goals either from set pieces or other forms of tomfoolery. But no, they would get beat down the middle again and have to play from behind again.

If the game to this point did not look like a carbon copy of the match from last week yet then the next goal that Louisville would score would really ensure it. 19 minutes would pass in the match with OC not yet scoring a goal in the match before they would get scored on for a third time and it would again come from a counter attack. While the lack of scoring was somewhat expected against Tampa Bay who are truly a legitimate title contender but against a team like Louisville, with the third worst defense in the league, it was time to panic.

Fortunately OC got their scoring boots on and it would be Ousmane Sylla to score the first for Orange County. Sylla is the leading goal scorer for Orange County in 2026. This would be the turning point in the match as it would be OC who would remain on the front foot for the rest of the match. The Sylla goal would come in the 70th minute of the match and it would take another 11 minutes before OC would draw a penalty. It was Yaniv Bazini to step up and he would comfortably slot it home, cutting the deficit to just one with a little over 10 minutes left to play.

It was a chaotic end to the match with OC throwing everything that they have at the Louisville net. We would see set pieces with Alex Rando coming up, numerous crosses put into the box and a last ditch effort that would hopelessly fly past Zubak at the back post. Ultimately OC would be defeated 2-3 but there were positives to be had from the game. A big one is the return of Mataeo Bunbury; yes the same Mataeo Bunbury who was supposed to be out for the season with a knee injury. Not only would Bunbury get on the bench but would also get subbed on with 10 minutes left to play. Offensive depth is always appreciated so hopefully Bunbury can offer that in the final stretch of the season.

OVERVIEW

If you look at this game at face value then you only see the fact that OC have lost two games in a row, both at home and both by a wonky scoreline. However deeper thinking would show that OC now know what they need to achieve to be considered a great team in the USL. Right now they are just a good team with about 2 months left to play. If there was any a time to lose a game then it would rather be in late August and not the postseason. Orange County got exposed against the best of the East but they are still a very good team when playing against the Western Conference. Next week OC will remain at home looking to at least split the four game homestand. They will welcome FC Tulsa for the return leg in what has suddenly turned into a very important match for Orange County just to get back on track.
