August 15th, Match #20 - Orange County SC vs Louisville City FC

The Bell Curve Game

In the rich history of Orange County SC they have faced 70 different professional soccer teams across a variety of different competitions. This includes long time rivals along with one time opponents. Of those 70 different competitors, 20 are current USL teams and of those 20 teams there are only 3 teams that Orange County have never beaten. Lexington SC is the first of these having only been in the league for two seasons however they have been proven a near equal to Orange County with the three previous matches all ending in draws. Another one that might go under the radar is the fact that Orange County has never beaten Birmingham Legion. This is an Eastern Conference team which only means one possible matchup a season and it has been a contest bested by Birmingham. That leaves us with the last team that OC has yet to crack.

Louisville City is the poster child club that the USL will show off to the rest of the country. They are the most successful club in the league with 2 league titles, they play in easily the most modern and professional looking soccer specific stadium for lower league soccer in the United States, and they have been known to develop and transfer players to Europe. So while I really do not have much of an opinion on the fact that OC have not beaten either Lexington or Birmingham, an Orange County win over Louisville would really be a testament to how good Orange County is.

The matchup of Saturday is going to be another USL heavyweight bout when Orange County SC hosts Louisville City. Both teams are top four in their respective conferences and OC will go from the first place team in the East to the fourth place. When these teams played each other in the past, it was Louisville that was the favored team. This will not be the case on Saturday with OC looking to go for the win to keep distance from a surging New Mexico United. Orange County faced thee hardest opponent that anyone can face in the USL and did not come away with an amazing result last weekend; thus perhaps they can save some face against a similarly ranked opponent.

THE OPPONENT - LOUISVILLE CITY FC

There was a point that Louisville City were running away with the league and it looked like nobody could stop them. The club that we know today resulted as a result of MLS granting an expansion side to the city of Orlando which forced the owners of that USL team to move their operations to Kentucky in time for the 2015 season; also making them one of the older USL sides. They sure hit the ground running making 3 consecutive USL Finals appearances and winning back to back titles in that same span. In 2019 they looked to be en route to a record 3 straight USL titles but they would get their part spoiled by Real Monarchs SLC. Not only would this end Louisville’s chance of a threepeat but it would also start a span of 5 consecutive years that a Western Conference team would be champions. Even more impressive for league parity is that there were no repeat winners from the West. Louisville would find themselves on the losing end again with their defeat to San Antonio in 2022. It would be Pittsburgh that would break the streak last season but Louisville really have not had as much success as you would think since 2020.

This season is perhaps one of their weaker ones too even though they are still fourth in the East. But just to show how high of a standard they have played at you have to look at how many points they earn. In their entire 12 year history the lowest position on the Eastern Conference table they have finished in is 5th. Right now they are fourth in the East with 7 losses to this point. That same season that saw them finish 5th saw them end with 12 losses. This was a team that ended the 2025 season with just a single loss but has fallen back to reality. But why are they not performing at the rate we are used to from them? Maybe it is because they are tied for the fourth worst defense in the entire USL Championship. The only teams who have let in more goals than them are Monterey Bay and Jacksonville; both dead last in their conferences. They scored four goals against Tampa Bay and lost the game. If OC had a hard time generating offense against Tampa last week then the hope is they will get back on track against Louisville.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

If Louisville loves goals so much that they have conceded 32 in 19 games played, then it should not be a surprise that offense is a big strength for them. Their 33 goals scored is good enough for 3rd in the USL. An interesting bit of information is that three teams in the East this season have already eclipsed the 30 goal plateau with no one yet in the West to do so. The leading goal scorer for a high octane Louisville offense is Jansen Wilson. In 18 league appearances he leads the team with 7 goals but it is what he has done in the League Cup that also gets him praise. This is a midfielder who is only 2 appearances away from 100 all time with Louisville City who are also the only team he has been with. Even more impressive is this is only his third season with the club. It does not matter what the competition is, he is going to play in it. For added fan points he also went to the University of Kentucky. He only needs three more league goals for a new career high in a single season.

On the orange side of things, lets do an Alex Rando check in. Orange County’s first choice keeper did not have a game to remember last week but really he has been a strength for Orange County the majority of the season. As far as how Danny Stone has used his keepers to this point we have only seen Rando in the league and Open Cup and Kadono in the League Cup. With both in-season competitions done however it remains to be seen if Tetsuya gets a nod down the line or not. For now we can only assume that Rando will keep getting the starts. The stats are in favor of Rando as well with his 57 saves the fourth most in the league. No this is not a bad stat for OC when you consider that the keeper in fifth place is from a New Mexico side that has gone 10 games unbeaten. Rando’s six clean sheets are tied for third in the league only being two behind Siaha at Hartford. Alex Rando has made the Colin Shutler departure a lot better to stomach.

PREDICTED STARTING XI

Injury roulette looks to be back on the menu with last week seeing the absences of Lyam MacKinnon, Mouhamadou War and Jamir Johnson all going on the injured list. Jamir Johnson wearing a boot to the game did not look like a good sign either. However we do know that War was back at training this weekend so perhaps there is positive news for him. The absence of Lyam MacKinnon really hurt Orange County’s ability to play through the middle of the defense so that will be one to watch out for.

I have seen two different answers of what formation does OC use with it either being a 4-1-3-2 or a 4-2-3-1. Really it is just a difference of how the attacking mids play in line with the forwards. The reason why I believe we are going to see the single forward is to get more midfielders on the pitch at a time. They have been the best group of the season so I cannot argue against it. However this does mean that Nico Benalcazar needs a spot so he slots in at his natural defensive mid position with War returning to the right back spot. Quite frankly the forwards for OC that have started have simply not been amazing except for Bazini who is the leading goal scorer for that group. Efren Solis has notched a position at right midfielder and OC lives and dies offensively through Ousmane Sylla.

THE MATCHUP

Orange County and Louisville will be meeting for the fifth time overall and OC will be looking for their first win in the series. This will be the third time that it is played in California and for Orange County scoring goals will be a good start. In the four previous games Orange County has only found the back of the net twice. The last time they played ended up a 0-0 draw which was very important for Orange County’s playoff aspirations. Including the Louisville game, OC has 11 games remaining in the regular season which means we are officially into playoff watch. This year OC should clinch a postseason berth much earlier than previous seasons with their first place standing still intact for the time being. With OC only playing four more away games then really it is only going to be about securing home field advantage through the Conference. Orange County are only 8 points above 8th place Las Vegas with the Western Conference being a blood bath as usual. OC would do good to avoid that as best they can. The only team truly out of it looks to be Monterey Bay who need to win and only win their games to make any impact. The biggest threat to OC will be San Antonio and New Mexico. New Mexico in particular have 3 games in hand on Orange County and are only four points back. So if you are looking for another game to keep an eye on then the New Mexico-Tulsa game will be one.
