Stop me if you have heard this one before. Orange County SC played in a league game where the losing team had the majority of possession, the winning team had less than 5 shots on target and Orange County’s forwards cannot get much offense going. This same scenario has played out a number of times this season with Orange County being on the winning side of it mostly. However their luck would run out and they came crashing down after a 0-3 thrashing at home to Eastern Conference frontrunners Tampa Bay Rowdies.
Orange County’s 9 game unbeaten run in the league is no more. It is the third time in club history that they have gone on a run similar to this yet no team has yet to really eclipse the double digit mark for wins. There is an interesting trend for Orange County when looking at their records up to this point in the season in past seasons: Since time immortal OC have played their best soccer in the second half of seasons and especially towards the end of the season. Don’t believe me then look at the months of August-October in the 2018, 2019, 2021, 2023, and 2024 seasons. I could be even more thorough and say that 2025 had a pretty good October as well. We have seen and experienced Orange County going on amazing runs of form when it matters the most. What makes the 2026 season run different is that it has happened in the first half of the season. So while Orange County is no strangers to playing towards the top of the table saying that they do not have much experience when leading the conference.
Tampa Bay on the other hand certainly does have that experience and it showed on Saturday. Tampa Bay had an answer for everything that OC attempted to throw at them and when their offensive opportunities did come they certainly did capitalize on them. There were certainly a lot of questionable decisions that went against Orange County. But the ref is not the reason that OC register ZERO shots on target against a team that conceded four goals last week.
FIRST HALF
Orange County know how to play without their best players which is something they have had to do nearly every game this season. While it looked like they would get past their injury bug, the bug bit again. OC would be without the services of Lyam MacKinnon, Jamir Johnson and Mouhamadou War. The absence of Lyam MacKinnon would hurt the most as that was who Orange County played through a lot when going down the middle. This meant that the lineup fielded would attempt to penetrate through the sides of the pitch. This was a lineup that was mostly the same one that we always see too. The biggest change would be the addition of Apolo Marinch at top.
The first half would open up as an almost exact inverse of the El Paso game last week. Last week, OC were really hemmed down in their own half but would score a goal against the run of play. This time it would be OC really holding the ball for long periods of time, only for Tampa Bay to get a dodgy penalty. A ball rolling into the box towards Rando from the side would see a 3-man collision between Rando, Tampa Bay’s Lewis Hilton and Apolo Marinch who found himself on defense. No doubt in my mind that Hilton gets pushed from behind in the box right into Rando but the ref gives the penalty. It would be Tampa’s leading goal scorer MD Myers that would slot home the penalty to open the scoring.
This would be the only very good scoring chance in the first half for both teams. Orange County would shoot the ball but each and every effort would hopelessly miss the net. To this point one would not mind the gameplan that much but chalk it up to being unlucky on Orange County’s end. It would go into the break 0-1.
SECOND HALF
The second half would be much the same but it became very apparent just how quality of a team Tampa Bay is. The Rowdies are a team that while very funny Orange County added to their legacy of choking in the postseason I cannot say I have a deep disdain for like other USL teams. Tampa Bay’s defensive structure did catch my eye this game. Orange County looked to move the ball up the wings as they normally would. The Rowdies had to have known this because every time either a midfielder or outside back got the ball, two Rowdies would go to challenge him. Orange County did not register a single shot on target and it started with OC not being able to push the ball up the pitch. The same thing could be said about Orange County’s defensive gameplan which did good to limit Tampa Bay’s chances. However when Tampa did get a chance they sure did capitalize on it.
In the 58th minute, Ousmane Sylla would have the ball at the edge of the offensive box. He would have a Tampa defender draped all over him. This forced a dispossession and a counter attack going the other way that looked to be evenly competitive. However the ball would squirt to a wide open Marco Micaletto who had an open net to shoot on. A referee is never to blame for a loss. However a gripe with soccer refs and how these games are managed nowadays is the fact that you never see a foul called unless the player falls to the ground. Ousmane Sylla gets fouled but does not fall down so the ref waves the play on. This results in a Tampa Bay goal. If Sylla were to fall down would the play be called differently? We see a lot of players fall to the floor easy in professional soccer but it is because they have to ensure they get a free kick. To this point in the game it was still just a one score advantage but any chance of a comeback would get shot with this.
Orange County could not generate a lick of offense and to really put the icing on the cake Tampa Bay would score a third goal on a rush up the pitch. In one fell swoop, OC would see their unbeaten run end, their streak of scoring goals end, and would fail to beat Tampa Bay in the regular season for now a fourth time.
OVERVIEW
With just how close OC were to walking the line in some games that they got wins from, this probably felt like the most decisive game in a long time. It was very clear that the better side won on Saturday. Fortunately for Orange County they are still on track for a very high position in the Western Conference. They were going to have a bad game one of these days so it was probably best that it happened in early August and not say the postseason.
We saw what happened to Orange County when they played a number one team (that probably still holds some resentment) in Tampa Bay. But what happens if Orange County plays a very close team in terms of skill level? While OC have beaten Tampa Bay before, one team they have never beaten is Louisville City. OCSC cannot skip a beat as they will welcome another Eastern Conference juggernaut. These are good games to play to see just how far OC has come as well as has left to go. Their place in the West is still in first for the time being and really the only thing lost from Saturday is likely homefield advantage in a potential USL Final. We are not really near postseason watch in that we are looking at out of town scores quite yet. The best thing that OC can do is burn the game film and move on.
