OC Eats #1: Taqueria HOY!

One of the best parts about going to sporting events is spending way too much money on way too much food. There are a number of options at Championship Stadium, so what’s worth your money? In this series, inspired from gameday reviews of football eats in stadiums across the world, we’re going to review some of the different food offerings that you can partake in on matchdays!

Main Dish: Street Tacos

Price: $3/taco

Vendor: Taqueria Hoy!

Location: Food Truck Alley behind the Supporter’s Section

A staple at OCSC matches is the Taqueria Hoy! truck. The OC-based eatery has been a mainstay on matchday since they became the official taco of OCSC in 2022.

This week, I ordered a trio of tacos to mix things up (I normally go for the burrito, which is also very good). One great thing about Taqueria Hoy! is the selection of meats. On gameday, you can choose from four different meats, which is a lot for a food truck outside of their brick-and-mortar store. I went with three meats: al pastor, carne asada, and chicken.

I’m a sucker for a good al pastor, and Taqueria Hoy’s version is wonderful. It’s got a slight kick of spice at the end, but it also had a little sweetness on the front end, which was a fun combination. I could order all al pastor tacos and I would be perfectly happy.

Next up was the carne asada, probably the spiciest of the three. The heat isn’t overwhelming, but it doesn’t have the sweet component that the al pastor had, so order a different meat if you have an aversion to spice. But make no mistake, the carne asada is fantastic. It’s so easy to overcook carne asada and dry it out, but this was far from that. Similar to the al pastor, it was rich in flavor and cooked to perfection .

Last was the chicken taco. I usually don’t get chicken tacos, but I would order it again from Taqueria Hoy! because of how flavorful the marinade is. The chicken is the mildest of the three in terms of spice level, so if you’re looking for something with little heat, chicken is the way to go. One thing to note about the chicken tacos is that Taqueria Hoy! will often have $1 chicken tacos before the game. They’re worth the $3 price tag, but for the quality you’re getting, it’s an absolute steal at $1.

Overall impressions: Taqueria Hoy! is one of the top, if not the top food option at Championship Stadium. The food is top tier and the prices are reasonable. Add in the fact that you’re supporting a local OC business, there’s no reason not to visit the truck during the game!
